My interest in the material steel began with the question of why there are so few FLINTA people working in industrial steel production — a question sparked by a residency I undertook in 2018 together with Karolina Dreit and Anna Trzpis-McLean at the former steel factory HSP in Dortmund. This led me to further ask how the construction of patriarchal divisions of labor is inscribed in the material of production itself.
In the essay steely fictions, I explore the cultural implications of steel as a material,
the hypermasculine realm of steel production as a site of feminist struggle and speculate about queer materiality.
